HKU-SCF FinTech Academy is delighted to have Dr Qi LIU as the speaker for this public talk. Dr LIU is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Oxford and his M.Sc. degree from the National University of Singapore.

Talk Summary:  ChatGPT has achieved phenomenal growth, gaining over 100 million monthly active users within just two months of its launch. Its potential to disrupt various fields, including information retrieval, virtual assistant, and programming, is significant. In this presentation, Dr. LIU will elaborate on the technology behind ChatGPT, which is based on large language models. The evolution of ChatGPT from its predecessors such as GPT, GPT-2, GPT-3, and the most recent version, GPT-3.5 will be discussed. Additionally, he will delve into the three essential components that have contributed to ChatGPT's success: computational resources, training data, and model scale. Furthermore, the vast and far-reaching impacts of ChatGPT will be examined. He will highlight the emergence of AI-first companies like Anthropic, Inflection AI, Cohere, and Reka, leveraging large language models to drive innovation in various fields. Additionally, he will explore how ChatGPT is set to transform education, search engines, and media, among other areas. Overall, the presentation will provide an in-depth look at ChatGPT, its technology, and its impact on various industries.

Speaker: Dr Qi LIU, Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong

Dr Qi LIU is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Oxford and his M.Sc. degree from the National University of Singapore. Prior to joining HKU, he worked at Google DeepMind, Facebook AI Research, and Microsoft Research, where he focused on developing large language models and chatbots for industrial applications. Dr LIU's research interests are centered around natural language processing and machine learning. His research findings have been published in leading machine learning conferences and journals, including NeurIPS, ACL, TACL, and CVPR. He received the AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar Award in 2022.
