Kai Tang, Head of Hong Kong, Adyen
"Hong Kong's premier financial hub status, fintech advancement, massive cross-border trade and steady international tourism growth create huge potential for Adyen to deliver seamless payment experiences to merchants and consumers."
Leveraging Hong Kong’s world-leading fintech ecosystem, transparent regulatory framework, and strategic connectivity, global fintech leader Adyen powers frictionless two-way expansion for enterprise merchants.
Founded in the Netherlands, global financial technology platform Adyen Hong Kong (Adyen) established its Hong Kong office in 2019 to support the city’s rapid digital payment adoption and dynamic retail sector.
A Differentiated Engine for Modern Commerce
What sets Adyen apart in a competitive payments landscape is its unified platform. Rather than stitching together third-party software or relying on external intermediaries, Adyen operates entirely on a single financial platform built in-house. By maintaining its own direct acquiring licenses and combining gateway, processing, and AI-driven risk management in a single stack, Adyen delivers faster settlements, lower transaction costs, and higher authorisation rates.
"Hong Kong is an absolute powerhouse as a place to work and live," noted Kai Tang, Head of Hong Kong at Adyen. "Since establishing our office in 2019, we have seen the city’s adoption of cashless payments grow by leaps and bounds. Now, high card and digital wallet penetration, combined with massive cross-border trade and steady international tourism growth, means both merchants and consumers have higher demands of seamless customer experiences -- opening huge potential for Adyen.”
Enabling Overseas Expansion with Ease
As Hong Kong ranks first globally in fintech offerings in the Global Financial Centres Index, it serves as an ideal launchpad for cross-border growth. “As a premier financial hub with transparent regulations, and a competitive tax regime, Hong Kong is a critical gateway connecting the Greater Bay Area to international markets, and vice-versa,” said Tang. “Adyen’s platform acts as a strategic bridge: we enable global brands to capture domestic and visiting shoppers in Hong Kong by supporting popular local digital payment methods while also empowering merchants in the Greater Bay Area to expand internationally with minimal friction.”
Tang added, “Today, we’re proud to help homegrown brands like Cathay Pacific and Klook succeed on the global stage by delivering the premium checkout experiences worthy of their global standing.”
InvestHK is deepening the role Adyen plays for its customers and consumers in Hong Kong. "InvestHK plays a crucial role in helping companies establish and scale in Hong Kong by connecting them with regulators, strategic partners, service providers, and potential clients," Tang shared. "Its value is in serving as a ‘super-connector’ across the broader ecosystem so international and Greater Bay Area businesses can navigate market entry efficiently."
